“The plan: Read through all of the Children’s Picture Books in the children’s section of our local library.” This, from blogger and stay at home mom Carrie Brownell.
Carrie is a fairly new addition to the Sylvan Dell reviewer family, but she has already fallen in love with our titles. (A couple links to Carrie’s wonderful write-ups of our books: http://www.readingtoknow.com/2009/06/read-aloud-thursday-ocean-life.html; http://www.readingtoknow.com/2009/07/read-aloud-thursday-counting-giveaway.html.) Now, she’s inspiring parents and educators everywhere with her new, ambitious family literacy campaign and website.
Carrie’s original blog is entitled Reading to Know, where she reviews children’s books with a Christian mother’s sensibility. She started Reading My Library in September 2009. She’s a married mother of two boys, who spends much of her time trying to manage the piles of books in her home. (“Beware of the man of one book,” is one of her favorite quotes.) One of her favorite memories growing up is of her own mother taking her to the library, where she would max out her library card limit each visit.

Carrie and her oldest son on a reading adventure!
The idea: To read the fun books I find with my children.
The plan: Read through all of the Children’s Picture Books in the children’s section of our local library.
The goal: To work my way from A to Z.
The reality: Books will be checked out by other patrons, and I’ll probably miss a title or two (or 10 or 20). However, I’ll have still hit the majority, which will number in the 10′s of thousands.
The joy: In saying WE did it – our family!
The friends: YOU! Go to my website, Reading My Library. Grab a button, subscribe in a million possible ways, and occasionally stop in at your local library and explore their shelves!
Sylvan Dell Publishing has always been a proponent of education in the home. Learning does not stop when children leave school, and we’re excited at the prospect of Carrie’s plan and the inspiration it will spread to other families. So check out her website, and go visit your own local library. Support literacy in America in whatever way you can! Together, we can keep reading in the educational forefront and fight illiteracy in our country’s youth. Thank you, Carrie, for this bit of inspiration, and best of luck with Reading My Library!
What an interesting challenge for a family! Good luck to them.
